Hand carved oak chairs have been around since man first started using this fine hardwood as a resource for furniture over six hundred years ago. They are not only made for dining rooms, but in Europe during medieval times a king and queens thrones were made of solid oak that was painstakingly carved out over several years time. There are still remnants of this type of old world furniture, but are not in the mainstream of the recent consumers market. Many farmers would build oak rocking chairs by hand in the past, as they knew it would last for generations to come. Today, it would cost more to build one yourself, than to just buy one online or at a local store.
The oak dining chairs that you see being sold today are usually sold with a matching table. This is purely done under the guise of the marketing department, as people generally do not want to try and be creative in selecting the table and the chairs separately. Some where along the line individual tastes in furniture were essentially taken away from the consumer, and put into the hands of manufacturer. You can still by unfinished oak chairs for a separate dining table and stain them with a matching or complementing color. It is quite acceptable to have oak chairs with a walnut or even mahogany table, as this is not taboo, as most would have you thinking.
Oak dining room chairs do give off a certain air of status when guests and family members are sitting in them while you are entertaining and feeding everyone. A good chair will have a carved out area in the seat to add more comfort, much like an old antique solid wood office chair contains. Do not expect to walk into an average home furnishing retailer to buy these chairs separately from the table, as you will get some strange looks from the support staff in the store. There are low-end consumer versions available at Target, and a few other stores like Ikea that will have sets of two for around one hundred and fifty to two hundred dollars.
Just like the oak tree itself, any item or product made from oak instantly lends a decorative creditability of being steadfast and long lasting in one’s home. In the past when a family could upgrade to a solid oak dining suite, it was in itself cause for celebration, as they had essentially upgraded their status in the neighborhood. It may be all in the heads of consumers, but the heavier oak chairs instantly seem to have a feel of money, and power that everyone wants and strives for in their life.
Oak dining chair sets are easier to come by if you have them custom made, or purchased in an unfinished mode. You can pay someone else to sand them down, add four coats of stain, and a couple of coats of lacquer or clear coat to get them matching your formal dining table. The end result may be that you will spend more for this venture, than a complete oak dining room set will from the store.
When shopping the online want-ads, or auctions you can find sets of solid oak chairs that have been separated from the table, due to damage, or whatever reason that Murphy’s Law helped with to get to the point of that the oak chairs for sale do not have mated accessories. As always this writer suggests that you only buy local from people who sell on the Internet, it keeps everything above board and honest. Quite frankly, if you are going to part with a couple of hundred dollars for used chairs, you want to make sure they are structurally sound and not damaged further from the shipping and handling.
While and solid wood furniture may not be the comfy chairs that their leather or padded counterpart are, you just can’t help but be pleased with oak chairs for your home.
